Fall Capsule Wardrobe: The Inspiration

capsule wardrobe, fall capsule wardrobe, fall outfits, fall outfit inspiration, dressing for fall

Over the year, I’ve been slowly culling my wardrobe- getting rid of things I never wear and adding in more versatile pieces. I’ve been following the blog Into Mind for a little while now and I find her posts really helpful if you’re looking to streamline your closet. A few months ago, she mentioned the blog Un-Fancy, which I now read on a daily basis. Caroline creates a capsule wardrobe for each season with 37 items and shares daily outfits that she’s put together using these items. Her style is chic and achievable, which is what I love the most.

I’ve been thinking about doing my own capsule wardrobe and I’ve finally decided to put one together for fall. It’s my first time doing this and I’m not sure how it’s going to work out. My plan is to do a series of posts on this so later I can look back and see what worked and what didn’t. I often look into my closet and feel like I have nothing to wear, which is simply not true. On top of that, I know that I don’t really need as many clothes as I have because I end up wearing the items I really like over and over again.

I’m hoping this will be a good exercise for me. It might be hard for me to pick 37 items (or whatever number I decide on) and wear only those items, and it may be difficult to completely resist shopping during that period, or maybe it won’t be. I guess these are things that I’ll find out along the way!

My first task was to pull inspiration for this capsule wardrobe, so of course I turned to Pinterest. I noticed that the images that I was pinning featured a lot of black, leather, and knits and the vibe was simple and easygoing. I think that fits my style and my personality. As I get older, I’m drawn to classic pieces with a twist, clean lines and less fuss. Most of all, I want to be completely comfortable and still look polished.

Tell me: Have you ever tried creating a capsule wardrobe?

Gosh, I try every year to reduce my wardrobe size and find it so difficult! The temptation to shop is overwhelming! I’m planning another cull of the wardrobe soon. Great links, I’m so inspired by Un-Fancy!

I know, it’s so hard, but if I’m being honest with myself, I really don’t even wear half the clothes I own! Un-Fancy is so great- definitely an inspiration!

I love the idea of a seasonal capsule wardrobe. You would probably also end up saving money by only shopping for a set amount of items for the season. I know I used to love participating in Kendi Everyday’s 30 for 30 because limiting your options forced you to be more creative with what you have. Good luck!

Yes, saving money would be great too! I’ve never tried anything like this before, but I think it will be a good challenge. Thanks Shenneth :)

I love graphic sweaters. I want to add more and more into my closet. Also in love with those leather shorts! I love your idea of a capsule collection. What a great idea and a way to buy functional pieces that you’ll wear time and time again. I often find myself with a bunch of clothes and either wear few times or never really. I need to do more of a purge myself.

Me too. I think I’m going to include a graphic tee or sweatshirt in my capsule wardrobe. Ahh, it’s going to be hard- I think I will be very tempted to wear things outside the capsule!

  4. One of the many reasons I realized Fall is my favorite season is the fashion. I love that it’s warm enough to still wear my flip flops, but it isn’t too warm that my boots would be uncomfortable. I love breaking out my leather jacket and wearing pretty scarves. And pumpkin beer. With a cinnamon sugar rim.

Yes, I love those days when the weather is crisp but it’s not to cold to go sans tights. Can’t wait for this humidity to go away and the temp to cool a little bit!

  5. This is such a great idea! I know what you mean, I often stand in front of my closet and think I have nothing to wear but actually having a lot of options and pieces I haven’t worn in a long time. I need to add more classic pieces as well!

Thanks Maru! I want to have a better balance- more timeless pieces that I can wear again and again, with a few trendier items thrown in.

Sounds awesome! Sometimes I think about a capsule wardrobe, but I feel that I’m lacking in versatile basics. Of course, I have three very similar black skirts… but one is a circle skirt, one a trumpet, and the last is A-line, I swear… really…

Haha- I’m still working on my list of items and I had three different black skirts on there and I was like, “Do I really need all three?” I’m still editing and narrowing it down, but I know I’m going to have a lot of black ;)

  9. This sounds fun! I’ve been trying to collect very basic and simple pieces for Fall and for the future. I’ve noticed that most of my giveaway pile consists of those fussy pieces or things that i simply just don’t wear. I’ve found that it’s so much easier to find things to wear when everything goes together, if that makes sense!! And of course I throw in those detailed and fun pieces every now and then.

Yes, that definitely makes sense! I’m trying to make sure that all the pieces in my capsule can mix and match together for a variety of outfit possibilities.

I am excited for you, I cannot wait to see your future posts about this. I am using my Fall checklist as a guideline to shop and allowing myself about 5 splurges. You inspos are right up my alley and you are totally right we always end up wearing the same things over and over.
