Sisters

star-crossed smile, n and n in nyc, 30 rock, 30 rockefeller plaza, sister visit

When we were growing up, my sister and I didn’t always get along. Of course I loved her because she was my sister, but I wouldn’t say that we were close. I thought she was annoying- out of my siblings, she’s the closest to me in age and I felt that she was always in my space. I’m sure a lot of that stemmed from the fact that we always shared a room when we were kids, right up until I moved out of the house.

We also have completely different personalties. She’s outgoing and opinionated and I’m quiet and introverted. Those who know me in real life know that I’m pretty reserved and I tend to put up walls. I did that to my sister too- I wouldn’t let her get too close.

Things began to change when I moved away to the East Coast to go to college. Since I wasn’t living at home, I no longer knew every single detail of her life and we began to talk on the phone and text in order to keep in touch. I was growing up and experiencing new things, and she was too. Instead of viewing her as my annoying little sister, I began to see her as a young woman and someone that I could confide in. Having separate spaces certainly helped too. We weren’t living on top of each other anymore and I think we both needed that room to breathe.

Several years later, we’re now much closer. We talk and text regularly and enjoy keeping up with each other’s lives. She can lift my spirits when I’m low and I can talk it out with her when she needs advice. When I was younger, I never would have guessed that our relationship would have developed this way, but I’m really grateful that it has. It’s become a tradition for her to visit me annually and it’s one of the highlights of my year. She arrived safe and sound last night and I’m ready for some NYC adventures with her!

Tell me: Do you have siblings? Do you get along with them?

It’s great that your relationship has grown and that you’re this close now. I’m an only child and have always regretted not having a sister or brother (just a little bit).

My sister and I have an eight year age difference. While it took a long time to finally get to the point where we both felt like adults and equals, I’m really happy we did get there. I can’t imagine not having her and her constant source of drama.

Hope you have a fun visit with your sis!

I know what you mean- it took a long time for me to think of my sister as her own person. Thank you Lydia! We’re having a great time so far :)

Aww, I am so glad that you two are much closer now :) Yes, I have three younger siblings (two brothers and a sister) and love them all. My sister is thirteen years younger than me so I feel like I am missing a lot of her life and every time I see her (we don’t live far apart but still!) she looks older to me. It’s crazy!

  5. Yay siblings! Is it bad that I feel terrible for people who don’t have siblings? I think they are completely missing out! Of course, it’s not their fault or anything, but my two younger brothers are like friends that I grew up with and will be friends with forever! I love hanging out with those crazy, hilarious guys! :)
