I don’t know about where you live, but here in NYC we’ve been experiencing a lot of thunderstorms lately. I kind of like drifting off to the sound of rain at night, but they’re not so fun when they’re surprise thunderstorms and you’re caught without your umbrella! I feel like the tropical print trend fits in really well with this weather- when it’s monsoon season in the tropics, the rains can stop and start suddenly without warning. There are so many variations on this theme and today I’m sharing a few of my favorite picks.
Tell me: How do you feel about tropical print? Would you wear it?
Who’s excited for the Fourth of July next week? I’m still trying to figure out my plans, but as long as they involve a BBQ/potluck of some sort, I’ll be good. I’m most excited about having an extra day off work- I need a break! I love dressing to theme for any holiday, so today I thought it would be fun to pull together some patriotic pieces. You can go full red, white and blue with your outfit, or you could keep it subtle with just an Americana accessory. The best part? Most of these items are under $50 and everything is under $60!
Tell me: What do you have planned for the Fourth?

On Friday it was shaping up to be a pretty uneventful weekend, which was certainly ok with me. My grand plans consisted of: get a donut on National Donut Day, finish the first Harry Potter book and binge watch the second season of Orange is the New Black. That’s pretty much what I did on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday, my roommate and I met up with a couple friends for a little picnic in Central Park. It was my first picnic of the season and the people-watching was extra entertaining. One guy was celebrating his birthday with a group of friends, which he told us as he passed by our blanket a couple of times. Meanwhile there was a homeless guy in another corner, who happened to have a megaphone and kept making comments directed at the birthday party. At one point he offered us cookies, which we politely declined since we’d already munched on some deliciously gooey cookies from Levain Bakery. Sometimes you just have to marvel at the wide varieties of people in this city!
It was a bit hot and sticky out earlier in the afternoon, giving us just a taste of what the summer will be like. For my outfit, I went with a white top (I told you I’m having a thing with whites this summer) and pair of evergreen shorts that I bought at J. Crew last summer on super sale. I tied my hair up with a lovely little gift from my sister- the Bien Fait bandana from Madewell. I received a mysterious eBay package on Saturday (the bandana) and I was confused because I hadn’t ordered it. I did have a saved search (thanks for showing me how to do that Lydia!), so I thought maybe I’d accidentally purchased it somehow. Turns out my sister had sneakily bought it for me- she knows how much I regret not purchasing the tee, but thought this little surprise might cheer me up, which it absolutely did. I can’t wait until she makes her annual trip to NYC to visit me this coming September!

P.S. I’m also over on Fashionista NY Girl today while Heather is off celebrating her wedding! I’m talking all about summer style on a budget and I’d love for you to take a look!
As I was cleaning out my closet last weekend, I wondered if it was time to pack away all my sweaters for good. I did tuck away most of the heavier knits, but I left a few of the lightweight ones within easy reach. Boy am I glad I did, because this week we’ve experienced both summer and fall-like weather. Aside from keeping my lightweight long sleeves out for the fickle weather (Lydia described it perfectly), they’re good for cozying up at home or at night when the temperatures may drop. At least that’s what I’m telling myself as I try really hard to resist these two lightweight sweatshirts.
I love the entire ‘Bien Fait’ collection from Madewell. I have the phone case and I’m still get sad that I didn’t snag the t-shirt version before it sold out everywhere (ask my sister- I’ll text her from time to time, lamenting the fact that I didn’t lock it down when I had the chance). I was thrilled when they created a new version of the sweatshirt for summer in crisp white cotton. The other sweatshirt I’m loving is the ‘Oui Mon Cheri’ sweatshirt from J. Crew. I’m starting to realize I have a thing for whites this season and you know I’m a sucker for a French phrase!
