There’s so much going on in this fast-paced novel that’s set in India in the early 2000s. I was surprised by how quickly it reads, even though it’s a chunky book. At the start of the story, there’s a car accident that leaves five people dead. Then we take a step back and dive into each of the characters that were involved in that accident.

This is about ambition, power, familial legacy, and more. Both the characters and the plot were really compelling and I read most of this in long chunks because I didn’t want to put it down. I think my favorite character was Ajay, probably because we spent the most time with him and I had the most sympathy for him.

Reading about India in this time period was fascinating as the author explores the stark delineation between the extremely poor and obscenely wealthy. This book was quite dark and violent, which made it a little difficult to read at times. Circumstances require these characters to adapt or die, and then they must live with the consequences of their actions. The ending was especially tense as the power struggles come to a head. At first I thought it wasn’t the most satisfying ending, but turns out there's going to be a sequel, so I'm looking forward to that!

If you like sweeping, multi-perspective novels where you can’t look away, then this might be the book for you.
