I read BLOOD SCION last year and my warning is that this book isn’t for the faint of heart! It was much darker and gorier than I was expecting, so definitely look up content warnings for this one.

This novel is a story of colonization and oppression, and the horrors that are carried out by those in power. I felt that the social commentary was really powerful and it’s impossible to miss the parallels between this fantasy world and the real one. Sloane is only 15, a child soldier, and forced to endure some much violence and death and bloodshed. It’s horrifying, but we also can’t turn away from that horror. Our eyes must be open.

I thought this was well-written and I enjoyed learning about the mythologies of these Yoruba gods. I did think the end was a bit rushed as a lot happens, but we don’t really have time to absorb that information. This was certainly a memorable read as it was both difficult and engrossing. I won’t be forgetting about Sloane’s story anytime soon.
