Book Review • THE OBELISK GATE • I finally picked up the second book in this series and I’m so glad I did. It was so good!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I read THE FIFTH SEASON two years ago and loved it, but for some reason (aka no good reason), I waited until now to continue the series. Thank goodness for a creator on YouTube who did a deep dive summary and recap of book one in the Broken Earthly trilogy. I watched that video before starting book two, which allowed me to dive back into this world and actually know what was going on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Returning to this world felt like catching up with an old friend. It was so nice to be back inside this complex and fascinating world that Jemisin has created, and I loved returning to these characters as well. Essun is such a great character. I feel like you can’t help but root for her, despite the many terrible things she’s had to do in the name of survival.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
From what I recall about book one, there was a lot of action, a lot of movement. Just a lot going on in general. This book felt much more contained, but the story was just as compelling. There were some surprising revelations in this book, or at least surprising to me! And I still have so many questions about what’s going to happen and which side some of the characters are on.

I cannot wait to see how this trilogy ends and I’m certainly not going to wait another two years before picking up the final book (and you can hold me accountable on that)!

Book Review • BEFORE I LET GO (@readforeverpub #gifted) • This was hands down one of the best romances I read last year!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was so emotional and beautifully written. I was immediately drawn into the story and these characters were everything. They felt like living and breathing people to me. Even when I was just 30 pages in, I thought that the chemistry between the two main characters, Yasmen and Josiah, was SO good.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a short amount of time, Kennedy Ryan was able to make me feel the years of history and emotion that ran between the main characters. I was rooting hard for them as a couple, but I was also rooting for them as a family. I loved their family unit and they both just seemed like amazing parents. I quickly became so invested in these characters and their well-being.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was such an emotional story and I was very close to shedding some tears a few times while I was reading. I thought the way that Ryan wrote about grief and depression and loss was so beautiful and tender and real. I also appreciated the way she thoughtfully and respectfully wrote about therapy and mental health.

I did not want to put this book down while I was reading it. This was my first Kennedy Ryan book and I cannot wait to read more of her work now.

Book Review • MAAME (@stmartinspress @macmillanusa #smpinfluencer) • From the first few pages, I could tell that I was going to get along with this book. I connected with Maddie’s voice right away and I definitely related to some of her experiences throughout the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maddie, Maddie, Maddie, that poor girl. While I was reading, I really wished I could give her a hug. I thought she was a very empathetic and well-written character. There’s a lot of sadness and grief in this book, but there’s also humor as well. If you’ve ever dealt with grief, I think there’s a lot to relate to in this novel. The ups and downs of grief that Maddie describes felt so familiar to me.

Another area that I thought George handled really well was exploring complicated and cultural family dynamics. Maddie’s family struck a chord with me; they don’t talk about the deep stuff. She grew up being told to keep family matters private. So she keeps a lot bottled up inside her and she talks to herself about her feelings, rather than her friends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
George writes Maddie with such tenderness and truthfulness. The author incorporates so many topics in this book, including mental health, family dynamics, racism, workplace culture, dating, and relationships, and I thought it all worked together beautifully. I loved this wonderful coming-of-age novel and I can’t wait to read whatever Jessica George writes next.
