Book Review • ADELAIDE (@stmartinspress #gifted) • A few weeks ago, I got to attend a launch party for this book and it was such a lovely evening! Thanks so much to @mackinstyle and @stmartinspress for having me!

Prepare yourself because there’s a lot of heartache in this novel 💔 I thought it was both beautiful and heartbreaking. It follows a 26 year-old woman named Adelaide, who is an American living in London. One day she meets a charming and handsome Englishman named Rory, and soon she falls in love with him. The only problem is that she’s not entirely certain that Rory loves her back.

Throughout the whole novel, I just wanted Adelaide to be ok and I was concerned for her well-being. We see her experience highs and lows and the writing was emotional in a way that allowed me to really understand her character. And even though I haven’t gone through Adelaide’s exact experience, I think a lot of people would relate to at least some part of her experience.

The author writes about being young, falling deeply in love, mental health, and friendships, among other things. Speaking of friendships, I was very glad Adelaide had a strong support group around her. Wheeler also writes about that time when you’re still figuring out your life and career and what you want your future to look like. I thought Wheeler captured this stage of life really thoughtfully and poignantly on the page.

I was immediately intrigued when I saw that this book follows an NYC wedding planner. After planning my own wedding last year (if you scroll down my feed, you can see some of my bookish bride photos), I have so much respect for wedding planners. It’s definitely not an easy job! The main character of this story, Faith, is very successful at her job, but she struggles to find her own happily ever after. This book sounds juicy and fun and I’m excited to dive into it further!

Book Review • THE LIES I TELL • When I was in CA in March, I picked this one up from Target on a whim (I just had to check the book aisle, of course), and I ended up really enjoying it!

It’s about Meg, a female con artist, and Kat, the journalist who wants to expose her. When Meg comes back into Kat’s life ten years later, Kat is determined to finally catch Meg in the act. But as she befriends Meg, Kat starts to realize that she’s in too deep and she doesn’t know who to trust anymore. Kat wonders, who’s the real villain in this story?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The female con artist angle was pretty fascinating to me. Both women are building this complicated web of lies and you’re kind of wondering who is going to crack first. And as Kat grows closer to Meg, Kat realizes that the persona for Meg that she’s created in her head is not entirely accurate. The real Meg is much more complicated and layered.

I definitely liked the dual POV and having the opportunity to be in each character’s head. I thought the writing was good and that the author was successful in creating two distinct perspectives. I appreciated that Clark took the typical con artist narrative and gave it a little bit of a twist.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think this book was trying to highlight some of the injustices that women suffer at the hands of men and it showcases two women who are taking back their agency. This was a quick read that kept me entertained and reminded me that I really like stories about con artists!

I had to say goodbye to these shelves...

because we moved recently! Very happy to still be a Brooklyn resident 🙌🏿

We’ve been in the new place for about a week now and we’re slowly but surely getting settled in. I was a little sad to say goodbye to these shelves because they brought me so much joy, but I’ve got exciting plans for new shelves in the new place! I can’t wait to take you along on the journey!

New shelves soon means I’m totally rethinking my organization method (let’s be honest, the method ended up being piles all over the apartment because I ran out of space on the shelves a while ago 😅).

Book Review • YOURS TRULY (@readforeverpub #gifted) • This romance had several things that I love: Fake dating! Letter writing! Journaling! A male lead who’s in touch with his feelings! This book was really fun to read and I thought it had a lot of warmth, humor, and heart.

I’m a sucker for the fake dating trope and I loved the way that the main characters got to know each other by sending letters and notes back and forth. Adorable! They did fall pretty fast, but at the same time, it did feel like they could get to know each other pretty quickly since they spent a lot of time together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jacob, the male lead, has social anxiety, and I thought that the author wrote about that with a lot of tenderness and care. I loved that Bri made him feel safe despite his anxiety, rather than making him feel weird, or like something was wrong with him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just as the lack of communication was starting to get to me, the two main characters finally talked and got on the same page. However, there was one aspect of the ending that I didn’t love, but I can’t really talk about it, because spoilers! But I can say that I felt like the third act conflict came too late and was resolved too quickly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overall though, I was definitely rooting for Bri and Jacob. It’s the type of romance that I love, one that’s both lighthearted and deals with heavier issues. It made me smile and I thought it was a really enjoyable read.
