REVIEW • THE VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES by Sangu Mandanna • After a disappointing read, I needed a win, and this book knocked it out of the park. It was an utter delight!

It was like a comforting hug, a cozy blanket, a hot cup of tea. It was absolutely charming and heartwarming and I loved it so much.

Every single one of the characters in this book captured my heart. I loved our main character, Mika, and I had a lot of sympathy for her. The way she was raised to feel othered and like she had to hide parts of herself was so heartbreaking. She deserved so much better than that.

Found family is one of my favorite tropes and the found family in this book was just so wonderful. I loved following along on the journey as Mika formed relationships with each one of them and became a part of their circle. Also, the grumpy/sunshine dynamic between Mika and Jamie was perfect. A sexy librarian? Yes, please! Their romance is definitely a slow burn, but I thought the payoff was well worth it.

This cozy and heartwarming novel absolutely gave me the warm and fuzzies and I’m so glad that I finally picked it up!

REVIEW • OUR WIVES UNDER THE SEA by Julia Armfield • I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this book at first, so I was surprised by how much I loved it.

I thought the premise of this book was fascinating. What would you do if your partner went away on an extended trip and came back a completely different person?

And I cannot get over how good the writing was. It was beautiful and lyrical, weird and eerie in the best way. It’s a dual perspective, so we get to see Leah post-trip through Miri’s eyes, as well Leah’s experience on her underwater trip. This is also the story of how Miri and Leah fell in love, and what Leah was like before.

This was such a strange and intimate story and I’m definitely a fan of Julia Armfield’s writing now!

I will read anything she writes and I was so excited to read her latest novel. Her writing is beautiful in a way that gets under your skin. I also found myself getting lost in her words. It reminded me of the feeling I’d have as a kid when I would get cozy and read my book under a blanket with a light into the wee hours of the night.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The world that Ng writes about is chilling. Reading this and seeing the parallels between our world and the one she’s created, you see how easily we could get there, and it is terrifying. Also, she captures humanity so beautifully on the page. She writes about the way that people ignore or choose not to see the atrocities around them. I think maybe we’ve all been guilty of that at some point.

I loved the fairytale references in this story and the way that the characters had such a reverence for words and stories. Reading this, we get to witness how powerful both words and stories can be. Libraries and books are a source of comfort for a few of the characters in this book and that was just so relatable.

If you’re looking for a beautifully written and moving book, then this might be the book for you.
