![Book Review • KINDRED • I finally read my first book by Octavia E. Butler and I’ve got to say, it was stressful and harrowing, but also so good.

It follows a young Black woman named Dana. She’s just living her life, until one day she’s pulled back in time to 1815 Maryland. Of course, she’s trying to figure out what the hell is happening, but more importantly, she’s trying to survive in a time period where she’s immediately assumed to be an enslaved person. As you can imagine, the transition for Dana is extremely difficult because she knows what it’s like to be free.

I’m realizing that I can only read one or two books about slavery a year because it’s just so hard. The opening line of this book grabbed me immediately and I was so scared for Dana the whole time. It was tough to read, but at the same time, I didn’t want to put it down because I needed to know what would happen to Dana. Just the fact that she is an educated Black woman in a time when enslaved people were not allowed to be educated gets Dana into so much trouble.

At one point, Dana realizes how much she’s settled into the life of an enslaved person as the line between the past and the present begins to blur for her. That’s so terrifying. And then there’s the character of Rufus, who is both complicated and despicable. Dana is caught in an impossible situation. We see her doing her best to navigate her new circumstances and questioning the person she thought she was.

Side note: I like my science fiction light on the science, lol, so I was glad that this book didn’t dwell a lot on the mechanics of how it all works.
