Book Review • NATURAL BEAUTY 💅🏿

This book was weird and unsettling and I devoured it in one day! The short chapters really kept the momentum going and I couldn’t stop turning the pages to see what sinister forces were lurking beneath the surface.

I appreciated the author’s exploration of race and identity throughout the book. The narrator is bullied horribly when she’s a child and she just wants to belong. At school, she throws away the food that her parents gave her, hoping to fit in. And later at the store, she assumes a new name, Anna, to make it easier for the customers who would find her original name too exotic and too difficult to pronounce.

When the narrator is first thrown into the world of Holistik, she finally has access to this world of privilege. Her life improves, she makes new friends, and her physical appearance changes. But at the same time, she sees things that unsettle her and she knows that everything is not quite right.

This book is also a commentary on the beauty and self-care industry. The treatments that Holistik offers are only available to the very wealthy. Some of them sound absolutely wild and/or somewhat dangerous, and yet the store has a line of people out the door, waiting to scoop up these products. Holistik’s products promise to make you beautiful, but they are tailored to a very specific type of beauty, which is something that the narrator discovers as she gets more and more tangled up in the world of Holistik.

I really enjoyed the writing, which had a dreamlike quality at times when the lines of reality seemed blurred. I thought this was such a fascinating and engaging read!
